Seventeen.

Erika

Roland threw another ball of dark hazed magic at me which I shielded just in time. We were sparring with each other by the cliffs, although I was never going to be able to hit him.

I was aching after what he did to me yesterday, but I was also left in a state of pure lust. My feelings towards him had only intensified.

“Good, Rika. You're improving.” Roland smiled as he approached.

“Well, I have the best teacher,” I replied with a grin.

“I'll start teaching you more complex magic soon. There’s so much that we can do, plus I'll also teach you to banish the Darkness.”

I nodded. “Please, I want to help.”

“And you will, my little enigma.” His lips brushed against mine softly, and I was so ready for this kiss to be deepened if it wasn’t for his Vocavit on his wrist ringing.

“Commander,” he swiped and answered.

“General, we have a Darkness report just in.”

“Where?”

“Approaching Septa.”

My heart sunk, my chest constricting in fear.

Roland’s expression turned cold and deadly as he looked at me. “How long do we have?”

“It’s estimated to be two hours out, but it’s moving fast, Sir.”

“Get the Helicrafts ready now. We're coming.”

“Yes, General.”

Roland cut the call and grabbed my hand, pulling me straight towards the car. He didn’t say a word as we got in, and he didn’t waste any time before speeding the car down the road, weaving through traffic as we rushed through the city.

“Roland,” I whispered.

“Erika, we'll make it there.”

“My dad...”

“I know. Look at me, Rika. We'll make it. Septa isn't that far away by air.”

I nodded, although his confidence and belief didn’t ease the pain in my chest. I couldn’t lose my dad because I wasn’t sure whether I would recover if I did. I never rang him after the press conference after what happened and I was beginning to regret it now.

Roland got us back to the Palace at expert speed, and he instantly grabbed my hand and dragged me straight up to the rooftop where two Helicrafts were ready and waiting.

“You all know the drill. Let’s go,” he ordered to the group of guards who were waiting.

“I've got you, babygirl,” he whispered, pulling me down beside him inside the back of the Helicraft.

“I don’t know what I would do if something happened to my dad,” I murured.

“Erika, look at me.” He cupped my cheek to turn my head. “We'll be there well within the hour. I'll banish it.”

“We,” I said. “We'll banish it.”

“Rika-”

“Channel me again.”

“It'll drain your energy quickly doing that.”

“I know, but I want to help, Roland. Channel me. I can't let these people die. This is my hometown.”

He nodded. “Okay, but don't let go of my hand, Rika. I swear that if anything happens to you, I don’t know what I would do.”

I leaned my head against his shoulder as the Helicraft lurched into the air. I was scared but not for myself. I was scared for my dad and Sophie. Even Arlo, the asshole who bullied my friend. These people couldn't have the same fate as Prestwood.
